R.I.P. Ryan Davis, 1979 – 2013

I never knew Ryan Davis personally, but in a way, through Giant Bomb, I almost did. For those who don’t know, Giant Bomb has suffered a terrible loss with the death of one of its founding members, Ryan Davis. Ryan passed away on July 3rd. He was only 34 and had recently gotten married.

For me it’s absolutely crazy to sit here and type this. It’s hard because one of my biggest influences when it came to writing about games is no longer with us. As a kid, I knew that gaming sites like IGN and Gamespot existed but I didn’t really pay attention until I discovered the Giant Bomb podcast back in 2008. It was then that I learned about Ryan Davis and Jeff Gerstmann, who both became two of the biggests reasons I write for Big Red Barrel today. Hearing Ryan Davis say “Hey everybody, it’s Tuesday!” never got old and quickly became something I looked forward to every week. I grew to be a huge Giant Bomb fan and Ryan’s larger-than-life personality was certainly a reason why. I followed the Giant Bomb crew like crazy all through high school so in a way, I sort of grew up listening to those guys. It’s cheesy and might seem silly to say, but I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Ryan Davis and Jeff Gerstmann, simple as that.

My heart goes out to Ryan’s family, co-workers, friends, and everyone else suffering from the loss of such an incredible person. It’s really hard to hear about one of your big inspirations passing and the sudden nature of it all does not make coping easier. I’m going to keep this short and sweet because my eyes are starting to get watery and I can’t really see the keyboard anymore.

Rest in peace, Ryan. I was a big fan of yours and it’s heartbreaking to see you leave so soon.

  1. I just met the Giant Bomb crew at E3, aside from Ryan. Kind of figured that I had plenty of chances to meet him in the future, so sad this will now never be the case. My week won’t seem the same without him. A big loss to gaming and the world in general. Ryan was a man that seemingly only bought joy and entertainment to the World for others. The World needs more Ryan’s.
