  1. Thanks again for the show!

I noticed you were expressing a willingness to explore the comics medium and I thought I could kick in my two-cents on the subject.

If you want to read this verbatim on the show be my guest.

getting into comics appears (at least from the outside) a messy and daunting task.

It shouldn’t be… And by following my handy tips you’ll soon be reading the best stories of your favourite characters and making some new friends along the way.

    1. It turns out that there’s more comics writers than just Stan Lee! I know right?!? Turns out that this 80 year long industry has many names and people to look out for and if you find a writer you Like; stick with them, you might not get what you expected but you can guarantee a certain level of quality.

For example, I will read anything by Mark Waid, he’s currently been writing daredevil and for the last 3 years has delivered nothing but quality comics the whole time. When he moves on I know to at least give his next book a look at.

    2. Find a nice, supportive and welcoming community of comics readers. Well no sugar Sherlock! Trust me though this makes and breaks New readers all the time, not everyone can have a friend like me so it’s good to listen and ask questions to people who care.

May I recommend Talking Comics. They have podcasts, a website and chat with their forum users, oh and negative nellys are not welcome, Bonus!

    3. How to read them? Well you’ve got options, on the digital side theirs the unstoppable juggernaut called comixology and they have everything at the rrp with frequent sales where books cost as little as $0.99.

Fancy reading things in a more Netflix fasion try Marvel Unlimited. They have everything from the 1940’s right up to six months ago, your bound to find something you like.

AMAZON! they have all the collections, paperbacks, hardcovers, omnibuses and every publisher, character and creator at usually the best prices.

Or your local comic shop / forbidden Planet, if they got the right staff they can be amazing and well worth the extra money that comes from not shopping via Amazon.

4 James you seem to know what you are talking about, what do you recommend you charismatic stallion?!?

Glad you asked, here’s some absolutely great books sorted by characters, these are easy reads and just by knowing the character I can guarantee you’ll have a good time.

Batman; Year one, the dark knight returns, the court of owls.

Spider-Man; brand new day, superior Spider-Man, Spider-Man blue.

Hawkeye, (just search for Matt Fraction Hawkeye and you’ll be fine, seriously one of the best comics marvel ever made.)

BUT JAMES WHAT ABOUT INDIE COMICS!?!

    Oh easy, anything by image comics is a sure fire hit check out these books from volume1 and go forward from there;

Saga, basically a space opera with strong fantasy elements and crocodile butlers. Aka the best comic book in the world bar non.

Seriously if you want one book to read from this list it’s saga.

Oh and Chew, Revival, black science, peter panzerfaust, RAT QUEENS hell yeah! you’ll love that book it’s like a d’n’d session with 4 rowdy drunk women and it rocks.

Finally, don’t stress about reading everything from issue 1 when it comes to superheroes, books change and evolve as they go along and truth be told a lot of older books are hokey to the point of being barely readable. Unless Jack Kirby drew it in which case it’s a masterpiece (I’ll have more to say on Jack ‘the King of comics’ Kirby next time)

So please be brave and take the plunge you won’t regret it and it will give you serious geek cred.

Also don’t start with civil war, that book is bloody dumb and written by a complete hack.

    • Saga and Rat Queens are fantastic suggestions – heck anything produced by Image is usually great. I’m really enjoying Sex Criminals at the mo which is also produced by Image

  2. Really liking this podcast, fun to catch it 5 episodes in! I’m also listening back through the archives of the Barrelcast which is proving amusing as well. Even though I only consider myself marginally female (biologically I am), it’s nice to hear female voices discussing the geekier side of things. Rock on, Barrelpuff girls! ^___^
