Power Ballad looks like John Carney taking a smaller, scrappier route back into music drama. The first trailer sets up Paul Rudd as a past-his-prime wedding singer who finds common ground with Nick Jonas’ fading pop star, before that partnership turns sour when the song they build together becomes a hit.
There is a funny bitterness running through it that helps separate this from a more straightforward crowd-pleaser. The trailer leans into the fallout, the bruised egos and the way a song can become a problem once everyone wants ownership of it.
