Review: Over 9000 Zombies!

Resident Evil, the Nazi ones in Call of Duty or just the average ones in State of Decay. We got at least a bit more differentiation in our zombies in games. In our fantasy games, they are often just weak cannon fodder in dark caves, in Minecraft they are at least polite and knock on your door – but mostly they are just between your gun and the goal. As the title suggests you fight a lot of zombies in Over 9000 Zombies!. And that’s the main mechanic of the game. Fighting all the zombies. To do that you use over 20 different weapons, and turrets. The game also has a simple crafting system, with this you can either build turrets or place down barricade blocks. You acquire the resources for that by, you guessed it, killing more zombies. As soon as you start each level the shooting starts. At first you only use a simple pistol, a few zombies later, you get to choose between three different weapons, these weapons are the root of the extensive weapon tree. You got your shotguns, your assault rifles, your SMGs and finally your explosive weaponry. Every weapon has a little bar which fills up as you kill zombies. When this bar is full you unlock the next weapon in your branch. O9Z! BRB 1 The game counts the many waves of zombies as days. After each day you get to choose from one of four upgrades for your character. These increase either your damage, your health, your turret damage or your ability to get more resources. The game also features a great looking day-night cycle. During these night it’s incredibly hard for you to see the zombies, as it’s pitch black and your only illuminate your surroundings. The only benefit of the nights, are the gorgeous shadow effects of the game. Should you have bought this game being afraid of zombies or the darkness, well first of all that’s a bad purchase, secondly fear not! Over 9000 Zombies! allows for three of your friends to join you in your zombie rampage, or one stranger over the internet. In multiplayer the gameplay changes a bit. The game is no longer over when you once you die, you a few seconds to respawn, it’s only over once everyone is dead at the same time. There is also no upgrade system in the multiplayer. It’s also encouraged for the players to communicate in some way, as you have to share your six turret spaces. O9Z! BRB 2 Apart from dog-piles there are some other items the player can step in. There are the standard medipacs, of course, but also scrap, your resource for turrets and blocks, grenades and some temporary bonuses. There can be invulnerability, doubled damage or doubled speed. Scrap is one of the most important items in the game. Without it you’d have to face the zombies without any help from turrets and though this can be done at the beginning of the game, the further you progress the harder it gets.  Generally, the environment in the game will be destroyed at one point during the game, this is where the other use of scrap comes in: The barricades. These block the zombies’ movement but you still can shoot through them. As with the rest if the environment these blocks can be destroyed. What I personally really liked about the game is the look and feel of the thing. The retro look fits the simple, retro gameplay perfectly. The dynamic shadows turn the nights in the game into an incredibly spooky environment. And what would a zombie game be without some gore, so killing the zombies makes a big old mess. Not only the visuals are great, but also the audio effects. Each weapons sound a bit different, and killing the zombies is so much more fun, if the sound is right. O9Z! BRB 3 [box type="tick"]Simple, fun zombie shooter[/box] [box type="tick"]Great looking pixel graphics[/box] [box type="alert"]No story[/box] [youtube id=”fow-fbZE1w8″] All in all this game is a great, little gaming snack now and then. A level can be finished in 15-30 minutes, depending on how long you survive, and it’s incredibly enjoyable throughout. If you want to kill some zombies and have simple fun, then give this game a chance.
