Set in the mid-90s, Steve reimagines Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy. The film follows a single defining day for headteacher Steve (Cillian Murphy) as he struggles to protect a last-chance reform school from closure while battling his own mental health challenges.
Alongside Steve’s story, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a teenager torn between his past and an uncertain future, navigating vulnerability, violence and self-destruction.
Directed by Tim Mielants and written by Max Porter, Steve features music by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow. It opens in select cinemas on 19 September 2025 and arrives on Netflix on October 03.
