You know the drill by now – someone in the gaming world does something good and we here at Big Red Barrel just have to shout about it. Gaming For Good is our megaphone and we are loud and proud to support anyone who is willing to help.
In this case, we are supporting the 8-Bit Salute Fundraiser running on May 17th and 18th. As is the tradition with many of these types of charity events, you are encouraged to park your keister in front of the TV or your PC and play games for 24 hours (poor you). Funds and donations are being raised by Operation Supply Drop, a military-focused video game charity, during the marathon – to be used to create care packages full of video gaming goodness for the troops in Afghanistan, as well as various recovery centres across the US.
This year, OSD have enlisted the help of some of gaming’s big names – including Rooster Teeth (Red vs. Blue), Wargaming America (World of Tanks, World of Warplanes), Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, The Last of Us) and ASTRO Gaming (makers of some of the finest headsets to grace my cranium). They have all pledged support to this worthy cause and will field fundraising teams of their own via the newly-rebuilt Operation Supply Drop website.
If you feel like helping out with this event (come on, remember the sitting-on-your-backside-thing I mentioned earlier), you will be able to log into the new Operation Supply Drop website to either join these teams or create your own to raise funds for the troops, while also having a chance to win a variety of prizes (Prizes!? – what more could you want?)
For those that don’t know, OSD was founded in 2010 by friend of the site, Captain Stephen “Shanghai Six” Machuga so we feel confident that regulars of Big Red Barrel will step up to the plate… and then sit down on the couch. If you are free on May 17th and 18th, consider either taking part or pledging support to others for this worthwhile call
