Big Red Barrel 111: Pacman Got Married!

Welcome back to another exciting episode of the Big Red Barrelcast!

This time, Dave, Kev and PMPB pontificate about:

  • “Free” console games for April
  • Doom
  • Gears of War 4
  • Star Fox
  • Steamgate
  • Fallout 4 DLC
  • Parsnips
  • Trump Effect
  • The weekly VR update
  • Shout outs
  • Bonus content for our lovely app owners

We’d love to give you all some sort of incredible hug immediately followed by a polite conversation about how cool you are, but frankly we can’t afford the travel expenses. So, while we save our pennies, cents, and whatever the heck Canadians use, we’ll offer you some download links to help bide the time. Did you troll my wife?

I got home this afternoon and she was just sitting, listening to this podcast. Now she hears podcasts that I have on all the time, but in the three years I’ve been listening to podcasts, she has never once (to my knowledge) turned one on of her own accord, and she definitely never just sits, rapt, listening like it’s some radio drama. I listen to a couple dozen, and I think that BRBcast is one of only two she actually recognizes by name, due to the amazing opening theme song. (She and my daughter both ask for it by name just to sing along.)

Anyway, obviously I was like, “What are you doing?” And she said, “Pacman got married!” When she saw my library update with the “Pacman Got Married!” title, she thought, “That is wonderful! He seems like such a nice guy!” She started the podcast, expecting to hear about the marriage. But she made it all the way through, and didn’t notice any mention of the big news. So she started it over. The first time she was multi-tasking, figuring news of a marriage would be hard to miss. But on her second consecutive listen, she sat down and really focused.

When I got home, she was already maybe half an hour through her second listen, and as she is telling me all of this, I hear Pacman say “Anyway, what else we got, on the agenda here? Stardew Valley….” and immediately I knew what happened. We laughed so hard at her sitting listening to the podcast for news of a Pacman wedding!

Thanks, as always, for my family’s favorite podcast!

  2. ^ This really made my day. When I read the title Dave gave the episode I knew someone would think I really did get married IRL. Maybe one day. I’m so glad your family enjoys the show. We are really quite proud of the theme song Kev created. We have another show inbound (one that is actually current). Thanks for sticking with us through our crazy scheduling issues.

On the topic of the Fallout 4 DLC I haven’t downloaded the recent one yet (mostly because I forgot) but I did play the robot themed DLC and one thing Dave should know is that it does have a story to it (and the story is awesome).  The main mission that comes with the DLC took me a good few hours to complete (no idea how long though) and if you read all the computer logs etc the story is great (although you don’t need to if you don’t want to).

One tip for anyone playing it if you are wearing power armour don’t use the targeting mod that turns everyone red it will cause issues with your decisions in the story quest.

So you guys are the only ones who ever talk up Starcraft. I haven’t played an RTS since Command and Conquer 4, should I consider buying the latest Starcraft or will it be much too difficult and impenetrable?

  6. ^ Absolutely! It basically marks the end of of an era for traditional base building RTS games. Single player is very accessible. With a nice learning curve, good story, fabulous level design and fun mechanics. Multiplayer is brutally cutthroat. More polite then most communities though. And there is also the fantastic Arcade, full of all sorts of crazy mods and variants.

I’ve mentioned it before but I usually listen to the podcast at an accelerated speed x1.3 or x1.5 usually and personally I really enjoy theme song at the higher tempo it reminds me of Blink 182 or that kind of sound.

Finally new BRBcast. Brand new phone’s headphone hole stops functioning. Sad day.

YAY! I wasn’t the only one to be fooled!

I have downloaded the demo. Not had much of a chance to play it though.
