Big Red Barrelcast 5: Fully Destructible

With new releases and GDC, the Big Red Barrelcast has lots of rich buttery topics to discuss this week! PacManPolarBear, Dave and Kev are here to talk about video games and whatever else they feel like pontificating about!

This time, they ramble on about:

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Gears Of War Judgement
  • Gamestop is losing money
  • More bad news for the Wii U
  • Battlefield 4
  • ESRB rating being taken seriously
  • Shout outs
  • And some healthy bonus content for those lovely individuals amongst you that bought our App

We’d love to give you all some sort of incredible hug immediately followed by a polite conversation about how cool you are, but frankly we can’t afford the travel expenses. So, while we save our pennies, cents, and whatever the heck Canadians use, we’ll offer you some download links to help bide the time. Subscribe here. Here’s the RSS feed.  Leave an iTunes review here. Download the mp3 here.

I’ve not played Bioshock Infinite but I know of the decision you were on about so here is my question. Has anyone picked the “left option”. I’m actually curious to see how it is handled. Will it effect the story? I do NOT condone racism of any sort however. Also, no spoilers.

Daves reaction to the discussion was epic.

By the way, where is my shout out?! #PMPBWTF

So yeah now that that’s out of the way. Starting to wish I’d bought a big hefty PC because HOLY S\*\*t I WANT BIOSHOCK INFINITE SO BADLY! It sounds like a living game. Like the way you describe it the city of Columbia is very, very much alive. Though thank you for the spoiler free discussion on the game though whilst heightening my desire for this game.

Also on the ESRB thing, my parents were always very strict with what I played/watched like I wasn’t allowed to play 15s till I was 14 1/2 at the earliest. They actually made one of my friends return a birthday present he’d got me. So I would just go around my mates and experience the horrors of Halo (on the brand new Microsoft Xbox) myself. Yet I was pretty much allowed to read what ever books I wanted, to the point of me getting books in the library and my Mum arguing with the librarian for my right to read them. So maybe it’s just new media vs classical media. I mean there are plenty of books written about gritty, horrible, violent murders that I’ve read described in the first person that is surely just very similar to a first person shooter.
Though this all boils down to education as was said. Just as I understand the the violence I read about is not something to EVER be done in reality so to do I understand that shooting someone in a video game doesn’t make it right to shoot someone in real life.

Also you guys are what’s hot in Games Podcasting at the moment! :P

Great podcast, glad to see Pacman back on the horse weekly. I have to say, listening to conversation about what BF4 needs made me think of this-

DO IT! ALL THREE GAMES ARE GREAT (even though this one time on SG I wrote an article claiming I’d never play Bioshock 2 because Bioshock was too great…)

I for one am frankly disgusted!
And BF4 does look pretty sweet, but it seems like pretty much everyone just wants a newer Bad Company style game than one of the ‘more serious’ main series titles!

Think people want aspects of Bad Company , It’s realistic to be able to destroy a building with a tank . Serious is ok , but you still want to enjoy it . Don’t want BF to turn into a sim .

Yeah there’s a large difference between being realistic, and being serious. For me the tone of Bad Company just made it eminently enjoyable, whereas the main series games feel just a little… dry. Obviously YMMV, and I’ve only really experienced the single player campaigns of both.
