BRB UK 42: Fist of The Brown Star

Ahoy hoy, hello but most definitely not ‘och aye the noo!’. Dan and Tim are once again without Jon – something about clipboards, jam and auditing – so are joined by resident Wii U owner and general video-based superstar Kev to prattle on about the week’s gaming news.

This week, we burble about:

  • EU Wii U owners can only download mature content in the wee hours
  • Fist of The North Star condoms
  • 3DS vs. PS3 lifetime sales in Japan
  • Xi: Continuum (PS Home)
  • Wii U roundup:
    • The hardware
    • Zombii U
    • Super Mario U
    • Nintendo Land
    • Rayman Legends demo
  • Tim talks about Ni No Kuni. AGAIN.
  • Sine Mora (PS Vita)
  • BigSky Infinity (PS Vita)

We appreciate you chaps and chapettes taking time out of your week to listen to our show. For your convenience, you can simply download the MP3 by clicking HERE or you can subscribe via iTunes, RSS or Zune and stay up to date.

Good show chaps! For Tims benefit, my name is from a little known series of books called Discworld and written by an even lesser known author called Sir Terry Pratchett. You pronounce it Rid Cull lees hat. So there you go. I do get alot of stick from illiterate teenage americans for it. thats why I’ve broken it down into syllables for their benefit. Anyway, I digress, great show and hopefully Kev has stopped fisting his brown star enough to get some more work done.

I thought it could not be done but each show is funnier than the last! FiFi and now Fist of the brown star

I Object! Terry Pratchett is very well known!

  4. RidcullysHat

That was the point of my little ramble about him. He’s a bit of a hero of mine and an avid campaigner for Alzheimer disease awareness. Hence my gamertag Ridcullys Hat. Some people think I’ve miss spelt ridiculous. Plus Mr teatime and commander vimes were taken. Strangely, alot of people haven’t heard of him or his characters

  5. awesome pod guys, i wonder if Jon is surprised at how you guys have made it look like he isnt needed on the pod anymore haha only joking Jon winky

I would hate to see the picture for the caption competition on that one thixty ! shock

  7. RidcullysHat

If they did an art competition they probably wouldn’t be able put the pictures up on here. If you’ve seen any of the films, you’d know what I mean. 😉

    • On second thoughts, never watch the live action film. Its horrible and its 90mins of your life you’ll never get back

Well they where in German but I got the gist of the plot lol .

  9. RidcullysHat

Was there one? I just watched it for the violence. I was a teenager when manga was originally popular (early-mid 90’s) but then again most japanese films are pretty hard to follow.

  10. Badhaggis

Meh, I always thought that Manga and Anime were horrible.

    *face palm*

not watched any of those films myself hmmm. I’ve led a very sheltered life.

Although, if you’ve watched urotsukidoji (if that’s how its spelt) the legend of the overfiend series, there is alot of that sort of thing. To be honest, its pretty much demon hentai porn but as I was a teenager and was just wanting to watch nearly banned manga I sat through through the whole series. It’s not even that good. A friend thought id like it as im a manga fan. My 15 year old (at the time) brother loved it. Its just exploding genitals and guts. Literally. There was probably fisting to but after after 1 hour of repetitive exploding genitals my brain gave up.

  13. steroidtulip

Exploding genitals you say ? Surely this would appeal to a wider audience lol ? I watched manga when a youngster , can’t say I like it much now . Saying that wasn’t ghost in the shell the basic story the matrix was based on ?sunglasses

The matrix was a take on a manga as the watchowski’s are big manga fans. Hence the fact that 90% of people didn’t understand them. I thought they were ok but we as overblown story wise as they come. Style over substance in my humble opinion

first one was a real “moment” in film I believe . The other two where a bit star wars prequel angry

HOLY SESUJ! THE THREAD IT’S… ALIVE!

Anyway, I think Ridcully’s getting confused with the much noted author Sir Perry Tachett. Famous for his many novels including his first “The Rug Chaps” and his expansive “Ringland” book series.

This Terence Prachett fellow sounds like a grand pretender to me.

In other, more podcastal news, I was sat on the bus when this chav started playing some music through a rather shitty set of speakers behind me, our exchange went as followed,

Excuse me, is that hip or hop?
    “Yoo fookin wot mate?!”
Your music. Is it hipping or hopping?”
“Ar yoo fookin wit me yeh?”
No, asking a perfectly civil question. So please tell me about your music, is it christmas or birthday rap?
“Yoo fookin high or sumthin mate?!”
High on life my friend, do tell me about this music though.
    “Fuk’ed.”

At this point he decided I wasn’t worth explaining this public music showing he’d given, rummaged around, found some headphones and used them instead. So thanks for giving me the idea.

On this show, itdid make an hour of my dull as sin job pass by rather quickly and made me less likely to collapse at my cubical’s keyboard so cheers. I even had some co-workers asking what I was listening to (as I was giggling at my screen) so I directed them iTunesward to find you. :) Keep the quality content coming.

there there it’s ok. it’s not our fault Tim doesn’t read…

my favourite character is Gaspode closely followed by CMOT Dibbler

  27. Ridcullys Hat

I think mine are probably vimes and granny weatherwax, Then ridcully and the librarian. Got snuff for Xmas (the book, not the powdered nicotine) which is good. I do have a fondness for death though, he has alot of near vimes experiences.

  28. Chris Shooter

:) – aye I really liked Snuff, i’m currently reading Dodger – which i’m thoroughly enjoying i have to say. I’ve also got them all (except snuff and dodger) in audio books and that’s a good way to absorb them too.

  29. Badhaggis

I humbly request, nay ANGRILY DEMAND, that a new BRBUK43 podcast is immediately released.

  30. Ridcullys Hat

Read dodger and its really good. I’ve got all of the discworld books and only have snuff to read, which I’ve started. Not heard the audio books but I know that some, if not all are read by Tony Robinson. I also demand a new brbuk!toothysmile

  31. Link90

A lot of the adressed wii u problems seem like normal consol launch problems to me, but i am glad that he is overall enjoying his next gen goodness.

Adding a bit to the 3DS discussion, it sold over 400.000 in Japan last week, in comparison to the 21.000 of the Vita. The WII U is also selling pretty good, making it the best global launching selling console in comparison to the 360 and PS3( sold the most at launch in its first month with 1.8 Million/360=940.000/PS3=560.000).

Back to the Bus talk now.

  32. The Wii U is in no way, “Next-Gen.”

At best it is on par with the 360 and PS3. The big sell Nintendo were making was that it could pipe games out at true 1080p, and that’s as untrue as it is with the other two consoles. It can upscale to fit your 1080p TV, but the games absolutely do not render natively at that resolution.

  33. there there it’s ok. it’s not our fault Tim doesn’t read…

I doesn’t what now? hmmm This isn’t Big Read Barrel! pft! tongue

@RidcullysHat – I have read some Terry Pratchett novels, just not any with the character you are referencing and it was a long, long time ago toothysmile

Also, just so everyone is aware – Jon and I recorded a short podcast just before Christmas, but as this was unavoidably delayed in getting to you we will now be releasing it as bonus content to this week’s episode – which we recorded last night and should be with you soon(ish) thumb

My reactions to the Wii U parallel Kev’s for the most part. I haven’t had the horrible menu experience that everyone seems to be having however. The menu’s can take a while to load, but mine are nowhere near 30 seconds.

Also I quite agree, the Black Betty level in Rayman Legends is so, so good.

True that. I had a go in a GAME store, when the guy started talking excitably about how it was “HD!” and how awesome this was he kind of lost me.

Edit; Wow there’s like 4 people online on BRB at once tongue

On the subject of next-gen . Are people ready for the next xbox etc ?  In the cash strapped environment we find ourselves in ; an new console is not really going to be high on peoples’ shopping list ? A massive leap in tech usually comes with a price hike . angry

I fully agree. I’ve never been an early adopter with consoles as never had the money. I waited for oblivion before I got a 360 and nearly wept when I traded in my Xbox, Gamecube and approximately 150 games. Just for a 20gig 360, oblivion and Quake. Makes me sick thinking about it even now.

  40. Until the launch line-ups get announced I won’t be able to get anywhere even close to anticipatory. I’m fortunate enough to have afforded to build myself a potent PC, so I’ve been living in the world of high-res textures, 1080p rendering, 60+ frames per second, and true anti-aliasing for a couple of years now. At best, the new consoles will equal that level of performance so in terms of hardware I couldn’t be less enthused.

The exclusive software and services are what will determine both my level of anticipation and whether I buy into the platforms or not.
