Big Red Flix 2: Goodfellas Part 1

Welcome to Big Red Flix’s first official “Be Kind Rewind” on BigRedBarrel.com. In BKR’s, the crew breaks a movie down to it’s molecular level to praise or mock ever aspect of the “cinematic” experience.

This week, Dave, Jitterbug and Yoshifett sit in awe of Martin Scorsese’s gangster masterpiece, Goodfellas. Since this movie is one of the greatest movies of all time, they’ve taken their time and recorded four episodes worth of Flix goodness about it. We hope you enjoy part 1 – check back on BRB in a few days for part 2!

Lol, I busted out laughing at Yoshi’s “What about Anakin?” during the anti-hero discussion.

    Awesome.

  2. DeanBiddler

Suggestion for the next BKR: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Awesome movie that still holds up. Plus, Bob Hoskins and Jessica Rabbit cleavage.

I must have autism YoshiFett. I see little inconsistencies all the time. It doesn’t always bother me but the worse the movie the more it bothers me I guess. Like even once when there was a car scene where if the actor was actually driving the car he would have shifted the gear when you hear the gears shifting yet his hands are both on the sheeting wheel!

You could just be hyper-vigilant. Or have spidey sense. You are gifted with enhanced perception and the ability to eat fire.

I think the correlation with the more things noticed with the increasing bad nature of the movie is that you are not engaged and find things for your attention to go to.

    I don’t eat fire… I Munch It

Never was much of a goodfellas fan, but with all the praise you’re giving it maybe I should give it another try.

I always loved this movie.  My problem with many gangster flix is that they seemed to drag on too long.  Casino is a perfect example.  And although I still enjoy Casino, it just seems to lose it’s narrative cohesion at about the 75% mark.  Goodfellas always seemed to remain strong throughout, that is just my perception of it however.

I say you should all do Crimson Tide. I made the suggestion a long time ago on SG, and I make it again, that movie doesn’t really have an antagonist and I wonder whose side you would all take. It would be a cool thing to discuss, and you would have a film-based excuse to have political discussion concerning war! Let the fight begin!

Good job on this BKR, but Dave, you should start to censor Yoshi’s Star Wars references. That would actually be hilarious, to just bleep out any mention of SW. Good idea?

  9. DeanBiddler

I agree, The Crimson Tide is an awesome movie. It has Viggo Mortenson and James Gandolfini in it. Plus, how can you pass up on all the horse talk. But nah, TCT is a solid movie with great actors and should be reviewed.

  10. Crimson Tide = a movie that might be an analogy for an improperly inserted suppository.

But yeah, it was a good flick about Seamen.

That’s disgustingly fantastic sir, well done.

I would actually say that it Crimson Tide is one of my favorite films if only because of the tension. No movie I can think of made me so tense and KEPT me so tense through the entire thing. I was holding my breath the whole time, and that main theme kicks f***ing ass. Military music in movies is usually pretty boring cause it all tries to be epic, this one is actually epic.

Oh, and Jitterbug, someone on my top 5 movies thread mentioned Oldboy in their top 5, and I asked if they knew about the other 2 movies in the “revenge” series by Chan-Wook-Park. Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. Oldboy has the most provocative twist but the other 2 are really cool and they all have something different to say about the nature of revenge and how horrible it is. Have you seen them? Big recommend from me if you haven’t, I know you would enjoy them. Probably hard to find though…

Actually Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance are both on netflix.  Oldboy however is not.  Lady Vengeance is my personal favorite.

Actually I guess that makes sense. I had a special place in my heart for Mr. Vengeance because I saw it at like 16 when I started getting huge into Japanese film and anime, but I agree Lady Vengeance is my favorite too. Weird that Oldboy isn’t on Netflix.

Excellent movie, especially if you like the Asian horror market and it’s “over the top” style.

Hey, you guys talked about Pink Floyd! That’s awesome, especially since I recently saw The Wall Live.
