Gaming For Good: Peace One Day and Peace Games Live

Peace One Day is an initiative to encourage people to participate in the global fight for peace. The organisation was founded in 1999 and in 2001 had its first major breakthrough when the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21st September – Peace Day.

I will let the founder of Peace One Day, Jeremy Gilley, tell you a little more about the organisation in his own inspiring and heartwarming words from his Ted Talk.

It’s time that gaming played its part on the path to peace and Playmob — a charitable gaming organisation — is looking to do exactly that. The Peace One Day website states; “Through the Peace Games campaign, Peace One Day and the lead partner Playmob is bringing the gaming industry together to challenge the stereotype of gaming, changing it from one that is seen as a negative force to one that champions peace.”

Today’s press release went on to detail the newly proposed Peace Games Live event;

“Taking place during ‘Peace One Day’, the annual day of global unity on 21st September 2013, Playmob will be running Peace Games Live, a 24-hour live stream event designed to raise funds for worthy causes.” The Livestream isn’t actually live yet, but can be found here. “Funds raised as part of the initiative will go towards providing vaccinations for children in war torn areas, education around peace and raising awareness of the movement. Playmob also envisions that Peace Games Live will demonstrate the passion, creativity and generosity of the gaming and development communities.”

While I won’t go into full details just yet, suffice to say that Big Red Barrel will be heavily involved with this initiative and will be encouraging all of our staff, fans and forum members to play their part too. It looks as though a major console manufacturer (or two or three) and a number of awesome indie game studios will all be involved too. Please make sure to tune in to the Livestream on September 21st.

Peace Games Live will be directly broadcast from the UKIE London Office, streamed globally through Twitch TV. Structured like a telethon, Peace Games Live will encourage donations to its charity page by providing exciting feature content from competitions, podcasts through to competitive gaming shows.
