BRB UK 15: In Action

In a refreshing break to the norm, some games worth talking about have actually been released over the past few weeks. So join Dan, Jon and Tim as they ramble on about the latest video game awesomeness.

This week, the chaps prattle on about:

  • Activision’s new mobile games studio
  • Another Wii U leak – horrible looking tablet edition
  • Star Fox Metroid Fusion Saga is a thing
  • StarHawk (PS3)
  • Max Payne 3 (360)
  • The Great British Debate: Should companies have the balls to release a game that’s multiplayer only?
  • WIN! Mass Effect 3 Art Books

There’s also some extra audio goodness for you lucky scamps who are proud owners of the BRB Podcast App – available for Android and the iThing of your choosing.

We appreciate you chaps taking time out of your week to listen to our show.  For your convenience, you can simply download the MP3 by clicking HERE or you can subscribe via iTunes, RSS or Zune and stay up to date.

  1. Before I forget (which, let’s face it, is quite likely), here’s those pics of the Wii U tablet controller monstrosity thing:

    Image Enlarger

And, to prove that it looks like a bit of medical equipment (which also appears to have a superior joystick to boot):

  2. Honestly, they could replace the Wii U symbol on the tablet with V-Tec and I wouldn’t be shocked!

As for the GBD, I’d like to make a point. Initially at least, I would think that only an established brand could make the move to MP-only releases successful; something like COD or BF would be OK. Also, to entice the average punter, they would need to reduce the price to maybe 20-25 pounds or look at some subscription service. However, why would they do this when they can now flog the same product for 60 with a gimped SP and charge more [and get it too!]?

    Anyway, good show, gents.

  3. if there was multi player games only, hard working writers would be out of a job and i would give my xbox to Jon why would i want to unwind after work with a bunch of high pitched american children screaming pwned or noob in my ears ?? so i say f*** off with this idea …… i win this weeks debate :)also having played the New Ghost Recon for a couple of days why on earth would you want to lose that gaming experience ????? and my final point which is admittedly weak would be that games would end up being battered out rapid and good titles would suffer from over saturation because at the end of the day its the story writing and building aswell as the special missions such as shooting from fighter jets ect in FPS titles that extend the amount of time between games.

oh and another thing all i will say is Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim … no single player?

I see you and raise you both games as MMOs. No single player. Just massive armies of players raiding a Reaper as a boss. Tell me that doesn’t interest you?

Or how about Skyrim… Well that doesn’t need any more explanation just let your mind go mad. xD

It all depends on the game some games are best as a primarily multiplayer experience as the mechanics in it do not lend themselves well to a dedicated single player. Howver these games are probably best suited to having the single player be tutorilas with bots filling in the other slots. This teaches the gamer the mechanics but also allows the majority of the resources to be focused on making a stable fun multiplayer experience. Brink is the best example of that idea I can think of but I have not played it enough to correctly access how well it was implemented.

I reckon with games that have the scope of the elder scrolls games the main story should be kept single player only. if multiplayer was implemented in a elder scrolls game I reckon a seperate co op campaign might work best. That way the epicness of the single player is preserved and the fun co op aspect can be experienced.

For the lower teir titles that can not afford the resources/manpower to make either one really epic then I reckon it should be based on how fun and/or unique they can make the single player to determine how much they should focus on that experience. As for multiplayer it would really be how well the mechanics would work in a competitive and/or co operative setting. There is a place for single player only, multiplayer only and both single and multiplayer games. It is just down to the developers to determine what works best for their idea and what they can accomplish with the resources they have.

    Spiffingly fantuboulous podcast chaps 🙂

GENTLEMEN! I give you something people said would never happen. People thought: that porridge would not interface with the Geth Cybernetics, that fuel cells could not run on Whiskey alone, that man could not become machine in some green synthesis…

I… Have defied their ideals and thoughts and created…

    Lejon

    LEJON, KIL(LER)T GETH.

A soldier who fights for the Captain Average who attempts to steer the crew of (plausibly termed) “good” ship SSV Winged-Gippo to valiant victory.

Regardless of how this does please get Mr. Faec to say “Average-Captain-Hurr-Durr” in his best Legion impression. Please?

nope the reason i have never played WoW is for this reason I like to be a lone wolfe when gaming most of the time and play co-op or a live game rarely hence why my gold account ran out months ago if i want to play online ill get the gold for a month for a quid deal. which can i add if you let you account run out theres offers on the dash constantly for 1 month/£1 or 2months/£3 and things like that you can save an absolute fortune this way
