Remember When Mass Effect Was Cool?

Seriously?  You’re enjoying Mass Effect 3?  If you were really a cool person, you’d have taken back Earth before the Reapers ever showed up.  Me?  I’m totally over the series.  I’ve gone from loving it to hating it so much that I felt compelled to tell others about it and warn them how mainstream they’ll be if they pick this game up!

Ok, I don’t really think like that, but after perusing through the PS3 Metacritic user reviews, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.  Honestly, if you don’t like a game, fine.  If you feel the need to warn others about a crappy game, who should stop you?  If you’re whining about a game because it… well, because there was a big ad campaign for it and now lots of people know about it, then please, get over yourself.

It is possible, however, that this is not the only reason we see these people giving the game a 0/10 rating.  At least, not the sole reason.  I would imagine, for a lot of people (especially those who haven’t played the first two games recently), there’s no way that Mass Effect 3 could possibly live up to the totally insane expectations that people have for it; too many people have been expecting “the perfect game” with the conclusion of the Mass Effect trilogy.

Obviously, Mass Effect 3 is not perfect, and BioWare/EA have made some questionable decisions about releasing what could be story-critical DLC on day one.  That being said, does it truly make you feel good about yourself when you use your tiny internet voice (and equally diminutive soapbox) to rate this game 0/10 on Metacritic?  I’m really eager to find out exactly what the logic behind doing this is.  I would love to be proven wrong in my thought that hipsters are taking over everything in this world.

What say you?  I know you’re on here, hipsters.  I know that not even the Barrel is safe from your judgement, so tell me what has gone wrong in the Mass Effect series; how has the finale not lived up to the standards of the first two games?

  1. The trolls use the 0/10 as a tool to artificially decrease the score of the game and make sure their voice is louder than a 5/10 would speak. A possible solution is to just relegate the user reviews on Metacritic to a Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down approach, akin to Rotten Tomatoes for movies, but who knows if Metacritic or game publishers even care about what User Reviews on the site say?

  2. Like the image says: Haters gonna hate.

Being a troll is being hip. Hating stuff is hip apparently too. Hating one of the biggest releases this year is ‘the cool thing to do’.

You know what my biggest revelation for the internet is? Forget what the internet says: Find out for yourself and make your own judgement.

Personally, come 9/3/12, I’m getting it. Then playing Multiplayer until I have an ME2 character to import for SP.

I could see how EA might not quite be sweating it as of now. Luckily, the game was worth the wait.

Thought this was written by Yoshifett due to that hilarious picture.

Yeah, I have to say that people just love to hate things that other people enjoy.

I do believe the phrase is “put your money where your mouth is.” If the game is really that god-awful, then don’t buy it and let that be your message! People aren’t dumb, and if a game doesn’t gain the support of its fans it will inevitably fail because it will have lost it’s source for profit. And even if, say, Mass Effect 3 did really well in sales and sucked hardcore as a game, how many chances do you see for a continued franchise? Not much. Overall, it’s fine to talk about what you like/dislike from a game that you actually played since you should be able to talk about you opinion, but being a contrarian just for the sake of making yourself feel “special” and “unique” has absolutely no place in discussion nor can I say that it’s a thought out opinion.

On a separate note: I’m starting up an underground Hipster Fighting league, so anyone interested let me know! I’ve never seen such brutality! There’s some serious money to be made I tell you cause It’s the sport of the future!
